As an orthopedic surgeon invested in providing the best possible outcomes for my patients, the decision to transition from manual implantation techniques to robotic-assisted surgery seemed obvious after using it the first time. From my perspective, the shift towards robotic assistance represents a significant leap in precision and control during knee replacement.
For many years I did manual total knee replacements. The previous systems were serviceable and under the right circumstances allowed us to get a knee as close to perfect as a human can perceive. Unfortunately, the current iteration of the robot can be held to a much higher standard.
The robot allows for meticulous preoperative planning, enabling me to create a personalized and optimized surgical plan for each patient. The robotic system provides real-time feedback and enhances my ability to execute the plan with unparalleled precision, resulting in improved implant placement and potentially better long-term functional outcomes for my patients. The robotic system acts as an extension of my skills, offering a level of dexterity and accuracy that is challenging to achieve consistently with manual techniques alone. I am confident after every operation that I have achieved the knee implant that I set out to.
